Sober Photography (or Art) Project: Assignment #14

Time for a new photography project! You can be a photographer, or a painter or a drawer… So time to dust off the camera, and get ready to photograph, draw or paint something lovely…

If you’re new to the blog, you can learn more about the idea of having a sober hobby here. See the results from previous projects here.

This is open for anybody, you don’t have to be a fancy ass photographer. No inner critic allowed. Do not procrastinate. Are you ready?

Assignment #14 … Red

Just in time for Valentine’s day, take a picture of anything that is red. Red like this font (not orange, red!)

  • DEADLINE: Tuesday, February 12 @ 12 noon Eastern. Yes, a short deadline. The longer the deadline, the more likely we are to procrastinate, oui?
  • The format is open: for photos, you can use your camera phone or a nice camera. For drawings, paintings, just take a picture (or scan) and email to me.
  • The project must be original, and produced AFTER the assignment is received (like, no going through past pictures taken, it has to be new).
  • If you suck at photo adjustments or cropping, send it anyway with a note that you’d like me to adjust.
  • Send as LARGE a file size as you can manage (up to 12MB per image).  Don’t reduce for size.  the bigger the better.
  • Um, you have to be sober …
  • One entry per person per assignment (think of the size of my inbox!)

NOTE: Find something and take a picture. It’ll turn out better than you think it will. This is a fun project, you remember fun right? I learned all about fun by doing this with Christina.

Here’s a sample to get you going.

Assignment #12: Christmas (here are the photos!)

Thanks to everyone who sent in pictures. Here’s what Primrose sent me:

Dear Belle. I attach a photo for the Christmas photo assignment.  Would you like an short essay to go with it?!  well you’re getting one anyway so here goes 😉

What I learned from doing this assignment:

There are lovely things everywhere when you start looking for them. I kept stopping in the street to take photos of random Christmassy things.

  • I should really dig out my ‘proper’ camera again. If I could find the charger. And remember how to use it.
  • I need to stop saying ‘I should’ and replace it with ‘I could’. If I don’t end up doing it, hey – no prob. Life’s too short to beat yourself up over everything I could have done but didn’t.
  • I am a ridiculous perfectionist. Well, bugger that. I am SENDING YOU A PHOTO THAT COULD BE BETTER. Blimey. What will I do next?!

Photos: Toothbrush Portrait

Thanks to every single person who posted or send me an email about yesterday’s audio.  i still swarm with six thousand wasps inside my guts when I think of posting my voice online. And then — for all of my angst — I’m rewarded with a fucking shitload of very kind and sweet emails. It’s like there’s a direct relationship between my angst, and how amazingly kind you are afterwards 🙂

SoberJessie: Belle, hearing your voice has just made this journey that much more real and meaningful, and a lot less lonely.

Dale: Thxs for this – and your many marvelous thoughtful efforts Belle! I’m so happy to report to you that I’m still not drinking and that this sustained experience continues to inform and unfold in ways that help me in going forward step-by-step.
