Solstice to Solstice June 2020

From Sober in Richmond (The Solstice Guy): “I started my 100 Day challenge on the Solstice [and am celebrating 5.5 years sober on June 21st] … If there is anyone out there who needs some motivation to start – perhaps they can do the Solstice to Solstice. It really helped me to have the power of the whole darn earth behind me rather than a day or date on a calendar … It’s an incredibly magical thing, the Solstice to Solstice!”

Imagine it’s the longest day of the year (Sunday, June 21st in the northern hemisphere). Imagine you’re sober. June 21st can be your Day 1 or maybe it’s your Day 50. Or 400. Doesn’t matter. Can you see yourself sober on December 21st? Winter Solstice. Stand here. Look ahead 180 days. Because if you think the view from day 100 is great, wait until you see 180 days.

Belle

I want to put this online, to hold myself accountable. I want to document the noise in my head. I'm tired of thinking about drinking. date of last drink: june 30, 2012

  • Hi – I just subscribed after finding the Kindle version of your book and searching for your blog online. I am on day 26. 🙂 I’m 51, married mom of 3, and I’ve been going through periods of abstaining – and then attempting to moderate – for a few years now. My drinking has never reached a point where it was a concern for anyone else. I gave up alcohol during my pregnancies and at various other times, without too much difficulty. But in recent years I noticed my drinking becoming unhealthy at times, and I just want to feel better. I have a tendency toward anxiety, and what I’ve realized over time is that the alcohol actually tends to ratchet my anxiety up. (The book “Never Enough – the Neuroscience and Experience of Addiction” by Judith Grisel really helped me understand why this is the case.)

This year, I was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition that causes frequent headaches. The condition is rather benign, and it should resolve on its own, but after giving up alcohol for Lent I noticed that my headaches were less severe. So of course once Easter came I was back to drinking :), pretty much daily with all the corona stress, and by late May I’d decided it was time to give it up for real. I want to set a better example for my kids and just be more present in my life. I’m feeling pretty good as I near the end of month #1. I haven’t told anyone “in real life” about my decision to quit.

Anyway, long comment but I love the “Solstice to Solstice” idea, and just wanted to say hello and thanks for sharing your journey.

  • I want to do this! Solstice to solstice. Sounds great and is giving myself a push and the feeling of power right now. So… Let´s do this! 🙂

  • I’m relishing in being nearly a year sober, and also using Belle’s wise advice to make sure we have enough tools. Another layer of support and accountability and encouragement!

  • This is weird, this Solstice magic works even if I screwed up the first time I tried (two years ago). Now every 180 days, when I see the Solstice post showing up, I get a sober energy boost again.
Thanks, Belle, for transforming this in a lovely tradition. I’ll stay here. day 706 and count me in!

  • I’m 106 days in and I didn’t think I’ll get here .. winter solstice sounds even better! 100 days taught me enough is enough and life is sooo much better even on the bad days.

  • I remember thinking 6 months ago, how good it would be to go from winter solstice to summer solstice without a drink. And here it is again, same thought process, same routine (drink a little one day, a lot the next, hangover, recover, repeat). I always thought booze enhanced moments for me and made things better. But the drug is clearly stealing memories from me because I’m on the couch with little energy. It’s making life worse. I’m tired of being tired. Let’s do this. Solstice to solstice – let’s go.

  • Yes count me in, I’m so ready for my day 1. I’m so done with relying on booze. I want to feel proud of myself again (and be healthier, richer and slimmer as nice side effects)…

  • I’m in – another Day One for me – going to do something different this time and make it public to a wider audience (even if anonymously 😉 l

  • I’m in 🤗 – Solstice (from today, day 21) to Solstice (to day 204) *I LOVE the sound of day 204! That’s super exciting to me. And it already feels pretty damn good and like a miracle being back at day 21, let’s keep going with the power of the universe behind us 🥰

  • Summer Solstice is June 20th this year, in the year 2020 no less. A new Day 1 for me. I like the idea of having the ‘whole darn earth behind me’ too.

  • I’m up for that – maybe I’ll stop counting the days from Day 1, and start counting down to the Winter Solstice – is it exactly 180 days away?

  • I love this idea. I’m in. Great motivation and I love the linking to earth energies. (Day 75). Thank you Belle for posting.

  • I’m in! I really believe in the power of the universe and do celebrate the Solstice so I’ll be watching the sunset tonight knowing that I can look forward to another 365 days sober on top of what I’ve done so far. I’m feeling really energised already, it’s a great idea!

  • This is “The Solstice Guy” speaking! Maybe I got lucky – it’s so UNLIKE me not to have a bazillion Day 1’s. I have not relapsed. That’s weird. Take comfort in letting the earth deliver the sober you to winter solstice. It knows the way. It won’t trick you. It won’t arrive late. It won’t veer off course. You might be tempted to drink, but don’t. Let the earth do her thing. Let go and have faith. x

  • I love this idea of solstice-to-solstice! I’ve never really believed in the power of earth energies, but then I’ve never believed in the power of addiction, either, and here I am wrestling with an invisible force for 16 years. This commitment feels like pitting good and harmony against evil and destructive chaos, and I’m in!

  • count me in and I am tired of relapsing and starting over. With the whole earth behind me, I have the power.
