Solstice to Solstice December 2019

From Sober in Richmond (The Solstice Guy): “I started my 100 Day challenge on the Solstice [and am celebrating 5 years sober on December 21st] … If there is anyone out there who needs some motivation to start – perhaps they can do the Solstice to Solstice. It really helped me to have the power of the whole darn earth behind me rather than a day or date on a calendar … It’s an incredibly magical thing, the Solstice to Solstice!”

Imagine it’s the shortest day of the year [in the northern hemisphere!]. Imagine you’re sober. December 21st can be your Day 1 or maybe it’s your Day 50. Or 400. Doesn’t matter.

Now, can you look ahead and see yourself sober on June 20th? Summer Solstice. Stand here. Look ahead 180 days. Because if you think the view from day 100 is great, wait until you see 180 days.

Belle

I want to put this online, to hold myself accountable. I want to document the noise in my head. I'm tired of thinking about drinking. date of last drink: june 30, 2012

  • Love the idea of solstice to solstice as markers along my journey – ironic that this year we went to some ‘stones’ near us to watch the rituals of the ‘watchers of the old ways’ to mark the winter solstice (then your email popped into my inbox, your timing is almost other worldly!) – as we walked up to the sound of drums, I was incredibly grateful for the way my life just keeps being ‘more’ now booze is no longer part of it! I like that the ceremony we saw was about letting go of the dark and welcoming the light, leaving behind regrets and embracing new beginnings – felt very poignant. Happy belated solstice to you Belle x

  • I wanted to do the 100 days challenge, but i will rather do the 180 days Solstice to Solstice challenge! I started yesterday, so day 2 for me. Yesterday was hard after two days of drinking wine. I’m so fed up with this state of mine and I hope I will make it through June.

  • I’m in! The peace and calm that comes with being sober can’t be beat. In light of the coming return of the sun, I commit to this peaceful way of life.

  • Day 7 for me. A call with Belle was just what I needed- intentions are great, but a concrete plan with specific strategies is what’s going to keep my sober car on the road.

    • “intentions are great” but we definitely need tools, accountability, and a plan! we can’t just ‘hope this will be enough’ … hugs to you!

  • Count me in. Need to give myself boot up the bum. Wavering currently and was aiming for fresh start with dry January, but don’t want to drink during the coming holiday period. Thank you Belle, thank you Solstice Guy.

  • Today is my day 2. I like the fact that everything gets brighter from now on. I hope I can make it stick this time.

    • You will make it stick. The earth can’t be wrong. When you’re tempted, think of the mass behind the earth, how it knows to keep turning, to keep revolving round the sun. It won’t let you down. Tomorrow the sun will rise.

  • Tomorrow is the shortest day, which should be the easiest day to be sober! And then I have 180 days to build my momentum for the longest day of the year! It’s all in the momentum baby! Count me in!

  • Count me in for the Solstice to Solstice. I stopped drinking on the 2nd of August & stopped counting days a while back. I’m feeling slightly wary of my 1st alcohol free Christmas and am struggling with the dark days at the moment. I always observe the Solstices & love the idea of consciously moving myself to brighter times & having something to grow towards

  • Here I am reading all of Belle’s emails on the day I receive them and clicking on the links. Solstice to Solstice gets me past a year. I’m in.

  • Yes a great goal..Soltice to Soltice .. especially as confirms that we are part of a vast universe and Have looked to nature, stars, planets etc as being the beacon that guides us!! This I feel is a great way to approach recovery as it grounds us to our existence.

  • I would like to enter the solstice to solstice challenge! I’m on day 63 today so adding 180 onto that takes me to 243 which is kind of incredible and the longest I would’ve been sober ever, only just though. Staying close and opening all your emails Belle. Thank you again for being there for me. Lots of love, M

  • I like this idea as well, something about ‘the Solstice’ just resonates with me – maybe it’s marking that moment of change from long darkness into the (ever so slowly) growing light.

  • I really like the idea of it I’m literally on day 5 after so many day 1s the idea of next June to me seems insurmountable I think I if I get through today, the weekend, December I’ll be delighted

  • Such a great idea! And I really love the sound of ‘solstice’. So, I’m in. Last year at this time, I was in a dark mood. Today, thanks to Belle I’m in day 140. And although it’s so dark outside, I have light inside me and am really looking forward to a sober fresh new year!

  • Hi, started my sobriety on June 23, 2019 (calling it solstice as failed first two days) with the hope of doing the 100 day challenge though to be honest 100 days looked like a life time so, I started with a month …amazing I made it. Next step 100 days, during this time I had my partners 50th party..made it amazed again, extremely hard but did it. Got to 100 days..fantastic. Decided to go for the next solstice which is tomorrow…yep that’ll be no problem, but, Wolfe has been whispering in my ear for a wine with xmas dinner….and I think it’s Wolfe that’s stopped me reading Bells emails !!! That Wolfe is sly. I’m worried because it’s only one day …. noooooo I can’t fail, my next challenge is the summer solstice. Wolfe is very quite but he’s smiling with a glass of wine in hand and another between his toes.
Sorry I just wanted to say I’m doing the solstice….

  • this whole solstice idea is one of the things I only pay attention to since I’m sober. after all the years when every special date was all in a blur and just another day one at its best – finally being on day 704 on june 20th 2020 looks like a miracle and an actually possible thing at the same time.
and I’m just grateful for everyone who is doing this sober thing here, not being alone is a big deal …

  • Hi I feel like I need to push the goal post further away as a year is fast approaching I seem to need to focus past that 365 ! It’s just a number but it feels heavy.
    X X

  • I love the solstice to solstice idea! I am on day 347 and I only just realized how many great things have happened to me this past year. I am very excited to see where I will be in June of 2020.

  • Hi This is The Solstice Guy talking! I can’t believe it will be 5 years tomorrow and I don’t know if I would have succeeded had I not started on 21 December. Every day after tomorrow will get longer. More light. More hope. More promise.
This program that Belle founded really does work. Stick to it. You WILL succeed!

    • Thank you Solstice Guy. What a great idea. I’m up for it. Can’t do it alone this sober thing. Besides I like the fact you’re in Richmond, my old stomping ground, grew up next to the Sheen gates of the park!
